Would it be possible to pipe fresh water from the melting ice-caps..?

...in the same way we pipe gas & oil? It seems a waste to let so much fresh water melt into the sea. Imagine all the arid regions on Earth which would benefit - it might also lessen the impact of desalination on the Gulf-Stream?
