Was it the pressure of world war 2 or ghandi that forced out the british from india?
It was combination of both as well as the Russo-Japanese War believe it or not. The Russo-Japanese war(1904) showed that an Asian non-white nation was able to soundly defeat a major European power (although waning power.) The Russo-Japanese war was the one of the last straws that began the Bolshevik Revolution and also increased the demand of self determination among the European colonies in Asia and Africa WWI further increased the demand of self determination since President Woodrow Wilson included the rights of self-determination in his "Fourteen Points." After WW II all colonial powers with the exception of the USA and USSR(much of the European portions were destroyed but much remained intact) had their home territories devastated. The British empire weakened by war eventually had to free it's colonies which included India. Whether peaceful or violent uprisings occurred the British empire was no longer manageable.
