Is the isolation of intelligent persons due to them finding interaction with those of lesser intellect too difficult to relate to? If so, how could it be possible for them to ever develop meaningful attachments to others if they cannot relate to them or worse yet, they cannot be related to? This providing that they do not perceive their intellect as a feeling of superiority, possible as a socially frustrating inconvenience making them appear to be rude or socially underdeveloped.
